The Northeast Classic Car Museum has grown by leaps and bounds in its 15-year existence. It began as the brainchild of a small group of citizens who were concerned about the future of the local economy, and looked to tourism to bolster that future.
Partnering with local farmer and businessman George E. Staley of DeRuyter, the Northeast Classic Car Museum opened its doors to the public in May 1997 with one building and just over 50 classic cars on display. Today, as the Museum celebrates its 15th Anniversary, it is the largest classic car museum in the northeast, with over 160 vehicles on exhibit in five connected buildings. Exhibits include over 25 Franklin
Automobiles (made in Syracuse), the Post-War Collection, and Cars Made In New York State, among others.
A special limited-time exhibit is featured each year at the Museum, built around a theme, specific year, or trend. In May 2012, the Museum will present the “Crystal Collection”, to celebrate its 15th Anniversary. This collection will recap 15 years of fantastic exhibits, and will feature examples from many of the special displays throughout the years. These will include a 1941 Lincoln Ambulance (Red Lights & Sirens), 1959 T-Bird (Nifty Fifties), 1908 Mora (Cars Made in New York State), 1953 Kaiser Dragon (Wild Things & Wild Rides), among others.
In addition to a world-class vintage car collection, the Museum also displays authentic period clothing, WWI & WWII airplane engines, and a tribute to the Bennett-Ireland Company, which was located on the site of the Museum.
The Museum has remained true to its vision statement to be a first-rate tourist attraction that facilitates economic activity and growth within the County and region, as approximately 10,000 visitors from across the nation and around the globe visit the Museum each year.
The Museum is open seven days per week from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and is handicap-accessible. Three motorized scooters, a wheelchair, and two strollers are available at no charge on a first-come, first-served basis. Easy to find just off the intersection of State Routes 12 & 23; free parking.
